Tracking the mountain gorillas in volcanoes national park is also one of the most memorable experiences of a lifetime. And for those of you that can’t get enough of these primates in just one day, we can offer you the chance to fulfill your needs with a second day of trekking. There are seven gorilla trekking groups that are habituated for tourism. Volcanoes National park is also known for its beautiful views of the undulating volcanoes of Mount Karisimbi, Sabyinyo, Bisoke, Muhabura and Gahinga.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Musanze in Ruhengeri

Our professional guide will greet you at the airport or at the hotel in the morning and will brief you about the safari. You will begin with a safari to Kigali, Rwanda’s Capital city that was named in 1907 by Dr.  Richard Kandat , who was the first colonial resident governor of Rwanda. This is the main administrative and economic center of Rwanda. It’s surrounded by the lush hills of green, and the cleanest and safest city in the region. Kigali’s face is her fortune and a dramatic beauty from which its name is derived. There are also other contributing factors. This is a city that delights the mind as well as the eye of any visitor and is a city where the past lives comfortably with the present.

On this tour, you will have the chance to see the following;

  • Visit to the artisan shopping center to view and also purchase the local arts and crafts.
  • Visit to the Kigali Museum and then learn the history of Kigali’s and Rwanda‘s pre-colonial and colonial period as well as the colonial masters of Rwanda.
  • Tour around the city and see the post genocide development and expansion of Kigali city
  • Visit to the Gisozi Genocide memorial site.

You then continue to Musanze and to your hotel. The journey to Musanze goes through the magnificent, hilly country side that gives Rwanda its stature as “the land of the thousand Hills”

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

So early in the morning, transfer to the park headquarters for the pre trek breiging for the guests. As you follow the trek, you will visit the Iby’Iwacu cultural village, based in the community near Volcanoes National park. At the Village, you will have a wonderful and interactive experience as you learn about Rwanda traditions, culture, dances and the songs. You will also have an opportunity to taste the local food and the banana beer and also visit the local household or the school. As well you can also chose to visit some of the local community projects and cooperatives to see, how your travel with us that contributes to making a difference in people’s lives. As you are at the Village, you will participate in one of our community development and the conservation projects under the theme. “Goats for Gorillas”

There is $ 50 community development and the conservation fee charged and is also used to buy a goat through the goats for gorilla’s project which is given to a farmer poacher’s family after trekking the gorillas, you will also hand over this goat to one of the families living around the gorillas’ park at the Iby’Iwacu cultural village. This is also an incentive for communities to protect and conserve the gorillas and their habitant and the way for you to give back to both community and conservation.

On the drive back to your hotel, depending on the recent available time, we also offer you a choice of value added activities from the following;

  • Visit the Ruhengeri market, which provides you with an opportunity to see and buy the local Rwandan fabrics, hand crafts, foods, and see how the markets are organised.
  • You will visit the twin lakes, Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo and whiz at the views of the Virunga Mountain chain.

Day 3: the second day of Gorilla trekking

Early in the morning, transfer to the park offices for a pre trek briefing for all the visitors and choosing the gorilla group you want to trek. After this trek, we will drive you to Gisenyi which is a lovely town that is located on the shores of Lake Kivu. Lake Kivu is also one of the great lakes in Africa and the largest of the fresh water lakes that glow in the Albertine rift of the Great Rift Valley. Lake Kivu stands at 1461m above sea level and is Africa’s highest lake. The northern shore is subject to the eruptions from nearby Mt Nyiragongo. Gisenyi also offers excellent views of the lake and the Virunga volcanoes Massif. With its waterfront and sandy beaches, Gisenyi is a very good place to relax, with the feel of a tropical beach resort. In the afternoon, we will be relaxing and re-energizing your reward after two days of trekking.

Day 4: Transfer to Kigali  

Transfer to Kigali. You will have a stop in Nyiragarama for lunch and then have a chance to tour the Urwibusto Eco tourism project. This started in 1983, when the owner and Manager SINA Derard opened a small restaurant and the bakery at the location.Over many years, his business grew and it has been his mission since 1993 to become a leader in the production and the rocessing of the organic fruits as well as the vegetables in the area and in Rwanda. This enterprise also supports the local farmers and contributes to the social and economic development in the area, thus providing schools and education, hence creating jobs and opportunities, mostly for the women and training of the farmers. This has also made the community of Rulindo district one of the most sustainable communities in Rwanda and a very good role model to others.
